In 2004 Böd Ayre Products Ltd started the first Shetland-wide gardening competition. Although there are a number of local gardening competitions, there was nothing prior to this point giving recognition for good gardening throughout the isles. We really enjoy supporting and celebrating the efforts of Shetland's gardeners.
Whalsay (Da Bonnie Isle)
Catherine Simpson shared 1st Equal for the Established Garden with Adam Leslie from Tingwall. The judges spent an evening trying to decide which of these two gardens should be placed first - then decided they should be first equal. Catherine's garden is lovely, as you can see from the pictures. She enjoys bird watching and her garden is created to accommodate them, along with butterflies. With a lot of manual help from husband Bobby in creating the paths, fences and concrete work, the two have produced something that is a real pleasure to the eye. Their garden is very exposed to the prevailing south westerlies, so their achievements are to be admired.
Tingwall
Adam has shared first equal with Catherine Simpson, Whalsay - as our judges felt they were both worthy winners. Adam Leslie has been a winner or runnerup in our Garden Competition for a few years, and you can certainly see why when you look at the pictures. Adam's garden is a maze of different areas, full of such a variety of trees, shrubs, and plants. It is a pleasure to visit and see his wonderful creations, and listen to his enthusiasm. Enjoy the images!
Gulberwick
Sheila has created a lovely new garden. In two years, from being part of the hillside, she and husband Robert have put a lot of hard work into what is now a delight to look at and enjoy. Sheila even laid the flag stones around the garden. A worthy winner in the new section.
Mid Yell, Yell
John & Sandra have won second place for the second year running in our new garden section. They have put a lot of effort and hard work into their creations. Their garden is really lovely, with so much compacted into a small area, including vegetables in raised beds. John has recently completed building a beautiful new stone dyke, which you can see in some of the pictures.
